I bought an old farm house.
It has a lot of character, and potential, but like many houses, it needs a lot of work.
One of the things I loved about the house when I bought it was the basement, yes it was serial killer scary in terms of it’s lighting and finishes, or lack there of, but it has a walk out and quite a bit of space.
With a new partner and his children, we decided to finish the basement so his children could also have space and feel welcome in this house.
We found a local contracting company, Caplake Contracting made up of three men, two brothers and one brother in law. Construction runs deep in their blood, they’ve been comfortable with renos since they can remember. Their Dad/father in law is a seasoned, exceptional carpenter who builds extravagant homes in the GTA.
When I work with contractors, I have to like them. I have to feel comfortable with them. Contractors are in your home for sometimes extended periods of time and you need to feel comfortable with them. From the minute the bro-laws came into my home, I got a good juju vibe from them. I also know their sister, and she’s a peach, so I knew they had to be great too.
So we made a deal, let’s make this scary old basement a beautiful space for three young girls.
The wish list:
- Three bedrooms
It took two months and with the MAJOR support of Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre, we have a beautiful space!
Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre, supplied ALL the supplies, so we created an account and Caplake was able to get what they needed (budget approved obviously with home owners) so they could get it done!
My fave products in the basement are:
BeautiTone Paint in Artifact (main room and bathroom). This colour is sooo great, it literally is the best grey!
Flooring: vinyl to withstand dogs, high heels, water and everything in between
Trim: I love how they made the trim, it’s unique and looks so fresh and modern. They used pine door jams, and what a cool impact it has!
Door handles: I love dark handles!
The bathroom mirror: This thing is soooo cool! Selfie light and is amazing for makeup and for men, shaving or taking care of your face! You do need an electrician to instal this mirror because it’s hardwired in. OH and also it has a built in defogger, just turn it on when you get in the shower and voila, no fog when you get out!
The heatlamp/fan combo: This is a must have in my opinion. I absolutely love this product. The exhaust fan is a must in a bathroom especially without a window, but the heat lamp just adds so much comfort, especially in our Canadian winter months when you don’t want to get out of the warm shower.
The custom wood work: Brendan from Caplake Contracting created some INCREDIBLE custom carpentry. He used yellow pine to create gorgeous barn doors, a custom cupboard in the bathroom and a stunning hand rail stairs (my moms favourite).
We were able to complete my wish list, one bedroom does hold two beds but it’s all got a pass from everyone! Brendan made lots of closet space for me as well so I was very pleased!
I also need to say that how clean they kept the construction site was truly refreshing and much appreciated!
The customer service at Chemong Home Hardware was as always, amazing. They always go above and beyond to help with anything you need, they are knowledgable and patient. From picking out flooring to doors to vanities, while keeping in budget, renovations and the decisions that come along with it can be extremely overwhelming and the staff of CHHBC are really trained and experienced at making it as easy as possible.
They’re delivery option is also amazing and they always have what you need, even it they need to order it in, they will find a way to help you.
Overall the chaos was worth it. The end result is fabulous! Thank you so much to the Caplake Team and Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre.
