Aside from them being absolutely adorable, why are Alpacas so incredible?
Kathy McConnell had Dan and I visit her Alpaca farm, Hubbert Farms, a couple of years ago. Their farm has been in business since 2006. What started out as a farm with 4 females, now has more than 75 Alpacas.
They’re incredibly docile animals, and contrary to popular belief, they only spit when they feel threatened.
They’re mostly known for their fleece which is excellent for those who struggle with regulating their body temperature. I have a sweater, a blanket and socks. Their fleece is a hollow fibre and hypo-allergenic as well as self washing.
Everyone thought $50 was a crazy amount to spend on a pair of socks, but they’re so worth it! Especially for those with diabetes or poor circulation.
Alpaca facts:
- Alpacas were first brought into Canada 26 years ago for their fleece
- The gestational period is 11-12 months long
- They only have teeth on the bottom
- They’re a pack animal, meaning they need to be kept in pairs at a minimum
One of these days, maybe ALPACA bag, go for a drive and sneak a few into my vehicle to take home!
