We recently got back from a family trip to Jamaica. It was a great trip (full vlog will be up this week).
Part of the fun of travelling is getting showered and pretty after a day of sun and sand.
I wanted to show you one of my favourite night time outfits. I loved this outfit when I saw it on the rack, but I was a bit hesitant to wear it.
I was worried a midriff baring outfit was too risque for a woman of my age. Then I thought about some of my favourite fashion icons, Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Lopez. They’re older than I am, and would easily pull something like this off, so I WAS DOING IT TOO DAMN IT!!
I actually wanted to wear different shoes with it, but these nude pumps were what I had to work with (there was a ton of walking at the resort so I needed my comfy high heels).
Next time I wear this, I will go with a bolder shoe. I have a great pair of black and gold Michael Kors. I think a punchy colour would look great too. You could really wear any shoe with this outfit because it’s black.
I also didn’t wear much jewellery because the outfit was a big enough statement.
I think this outfit has sex appeal without being sleezy. I was actually feeling pretty blah and bloated when I wore it (too many red stripe beers, banana fritters and mojitos). But the material (lycra) and stretch in the fabric made it super comfy.
The moral of this blog is: If you love an outfit, wear it! I always get asked how I pick out my wardrobe, and my answer is always “I just grab what I like”. We all have a style, we all gravitate to certain clothes or styles. Trust your instincts. Sometimes some folks need more direction on how to put it together. There are usually two major reasons an outfit is a “flop” instead of a hit.
- IS IT THE RIGHT SIZE?
- WHERE ARE YOU WEARING IT??
Honestly I’m constantly surprised at how many people don’t seem to know what size they are. People are constantly wearing something too small or something too big. Women are brutal at getting caught up in “the size”. They want to fit into a “size 6″or whatever size they dream of. The truth is, most sizing guidelines are skewed anyway. I’ve worn size 4 pants and size 8 pants (with no variation in my body weight). The make and style of clothes is a big deal. Take someone shopping with you who you trust. Don’t get all worried about the size. Take a picture. Gauge how you feel. If you feel sloppy or shoved in, you probably look sloppy or shoved in. By the way, guys are just as guilty at this as women are. There’s nothing worse that a suit that’s hanging off a man or a shirt that’s busting at the buttons.
Ok the second reason an outfit didn’t win: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. I would NOT wear this outfit to parent teacher interviews or my son’s hockey game. I was in Jamaica, at dinner, at night time. We all have days when we wanna wear hoodies and baggy sweat pants with our reeboks, but you can’t wear that to work. You can wear it when you come home and you’re slaving away at housework, homework and life. Know your audience, know what is appropriate. Know that you don’t wear daisy dukes and a tube top to a job interview, BUT you can wear that to Boots N Hearts;)
I have to thank many of the Jamaican women I meant for inspiring me to “own it”. Their swagger and body confidence is applause worthy. I have and will always say, sexiness has nothing to do with body type, it has to do with your confidence. Many of the Jamaican women I met were fierce and fully figured who clearly loved their bodies. It was refreshing and fabulous.
In case you’re wondering where I got my risque midriff baring outfit, it’s a Giant Tiger beaut. It cost me $ 32. It’s the new Kim Kardashian line.
Don’t judge me. I’m not a Kardashian fan. I just liked the outfit.
