Gary is twelve. Gary wants Instagram. My daughter will be 12 in just over a month, and she wants Instagram. I am not a fan of kids having social media too early. It’s a a big move, the internet is a BIG place that follows you everywhere. I wanted to know what the Police had to say about kids and social media. What is the legal age to have Instagram? What’s my responsibility as a parent to monitor my kid’s Instagram?
Kids are literally speaking a different language than their parents. Technology has changed how we parent. Many parents are scared and removed from social media, but it’s how our kids communicate. We need to be educating ourselves as much as our children on how to use it. Social media can be a great tool to connect with your kids. Honestly my daughter and I communicate better through text sometimes. She will open up and express her feelings more through text than in person.
Gary wants Instagram, but I wasn’t sure he was ready, so we checked in with Cst Grant Eastwood of the Peterborough Police at Lansdowne Place. We found out what you need to know about kids and Instagram! (watch time 5:51)
My daughter is only one of two kids in her class who doesn't have Instagram. We have talked about it A LOT. I let her see mine, which will help with the transition when it comes time for her to get it, but it's also good for me. It makes me accountable. Now I THINK before I post something. I think "Oh, do I want my daughter to see this?" Talk to your kids, set boundaries and use the THINK model! Before you post answer these questions first: IS IT:
TRUE?
HURTFUL?
ILLEGAL?
NECASSARY?
KIND?
Like I said, THINK is great for adults too!! As for Gary, I think he's gonna get his own Instagram really soon, until then you can find him on mine;)
