MF & Gary are back on patrol and this time we are in a school!! Cst. Andy Hatton of the Peterborough Police joined us in a grade 6/7 classroom to talk about drugs.
Drugs can be a weird and uncomfortable topic for a lot of parents and apparently PSA ads in the 80’s.
I know a lot of parents who don’t know a lot about drugs and so they just don’t talk about it with their kids. I don’t think this is a great approach. Drugs were around when we were growing up, they were around when our parents were growing up and they will be around when our kids are growing up. I think an informed kid can make much better decisions than a non informed one.
Prescription drugs are no exception.
I can remember in school getting asked to drink cough syrup. I didn’t think anything could be dangerous about cough syrup, because you can buy it at the grocery store. Today it’s escalated from cough syrup to potentially fatal prescription medication.
I’m a firm believer in talking to kids, they’re usually smarter than adults. Grade six and seven are pivotal years. The tween is it’s own species. I was a bit worried that they wouldn’t wanna talk about prescription drugs. I was a bit worried they wouldn’t like Gary in their classroom. I was a bit worried they wouldn’t tell Cst. Hatton what they really know.
I was wrong. These kids are smart and confident. Good job parents. Watch and see (watch time 6:32)
