Judy Heffernan is a well known and well respected name.
Sadly, brain cancer claimed Judy’s life three days after her 62nd birthday in 2013. She had been diagnosed only nine weeks earlier.
Judy and her daughter Charlina.
The idea of an award in Judy’s honour was presented to Judy’s daughter Charlina, by Darren Murphy of the Peterborough Examiner. Shortly after Darren got the ball rolling on this idea, he was promoted within Sun Media. He handed the reigns to Michael Everson who oversees the award nominations and winner.
This year will be the second annual award. Last year, Sofie Andreou was the first recipient of the Judy Heffernan memorial award at the annual Women in Business Excellence Awards.
It’s important to note that this award is a monetary one (undisclosed amount). It is awarded with the intention that the recipient use the funds in a way to mentor, empower, or connect with other women. The funds for the award are administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough (CFGP). Donations for the award can be directed to them HERE.
Judy’s daughter Charlina wrote this:
My Mom, Judy Heffernan, was many things to many women: Business Leader, Friend, Confidant, and Mentor. Mom took pleasure in the entrepreneurial dreams and passions of all women. Out of her desire to see others succeed, Mom acted as a platform that empowered and motivated women to go after their dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. She was the channel that connected women with the “who’s who” in the community and often advocated on their behalf.
The Judy Heffernan Award pays tribute to my Mom by recognizing an outstanding woman who may be a student, a business leader, or an entrepreneur who is a motivator, mentor and source of empowerment for other women. The recipient of this award shall exemplify many of my Mother’s qualities.
