We have a dog.
He’s big, he’s white, he has three legs he is six years old and the UPS delivery man really doesn’t like him.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home to packages thrown on the lawn.
Dexter is a Shiloh Shepherd, a specialty breed of German Shepherd. Shepherds are territorial and have an extremely intimidating bark. Dexter likes to think he owns the road.
We remind him REGULARLY he does not in fact own anything.
We got Dex from a breeder and he, like most pups was really friggin cute.
When he has only nine months old, he slipped on ice and badly broke his leg. It was Christmas Eve. I thought he would be fine but his leg was really dangling.
A visit to the vet and a few X-rays later, we learned that our puppy had completely shattered his leg. It needed to be amputated.
Merry Christmas.
We seriously considered putting him down. I genuinely thought he must have some kind of genetic disorder to break his leg that badly.
Well I bet you guessed how it ended: Dexter didn’t get euthanized but he did lose his leg.
He made the local news. He was called a Christmas Miracle. (It was a slow news day.)
Even now, years later, I often get asked “How’s your dog?”
He’s fine. He’s a good dog and I do adore him, he’s my running buddy and he’s a great nanny to our kids, just like Wendy, Michael and John’s dog. (Yes, that’s a Peter Pan reference.)
When we were offered a chance to try Royal Canine’s Pure Breed dog food, I thought, “Sure, why not”.
They actually have a German Shepherd food, which I didn’t realize was a thing: pure breed dog food is totally a thing!
My childhood dog ate chicken bones from the table and my liver and onions that a secretly gave him under the table.
But like human food, it appears animal and pet food has also made great progress.
I can remember one of my favourite dog trainers telling me to always check the ingredients in your dog’s food just like you would your own.
This food looks pretty good, no sugars or fillers. It also has specially shaped “X” kibbles to help with German Shepherd’s sensitive digestive tract.
Fun fact: Dexter has brutal gas and flatulence.
Everyone blames the dog.
Anyway, Dexter hasn’t told me how he likes his new pure breed food, but he does get really excited when it’s time to eat.
Actually he kinda turns into a human when 4-5pm rolls around. He’s the only dog I know that barks and yelps for his food then carries his bowl away in his mouth and lies down to eat.
He thinks he’s a human.
He’s not.
But we love him just the same. Thanks Royal Canin for letting us try your Pure breed dog food!
It’s a hit!
(But Dexter’s gas is still the worst in the house.)
