In 2019, Marcelo and Al invited Dan and I to join them at Blue Wave Taekwando.
Blue Wave Taekwando is a not-for-profit school in Peterborough, Ontario. From the age of 7, all skill levels are welcome. Dan & I were beginners, but they were super patient with us as we learned along side them.
We also had the opportunity to meet Bayan and Alaa. The girls are cousins and both came to Canada from Syria about 3 and a half years ago at the time of this video. Both girls came to Canada knowing absolutely no English. These girls are determined and dedicated to their learning.
Marcelo came to Canada from Brazil when he was 6 years old. His family was one of the first to inhabit this area coming from Brazil. At 13 years old he began learning the art of Taekwando.
As someone who came here from another country, it felt important to Marcelo to give back. Taekwando is a universal language and allowed him to gain the confidence he needed.
Bayan and Alaa went to their first competition in Toronto and each came home with trophies! A true testament of hard work. Bayan had only been learning Taekwando for roughly 8 months.
After suiting up, Dan and I hit the mats to stretch and start learning.
Before learning the technique to break the boards, Marcelo had me write a barrier in my life on the board. The board represents the barrier, by breaking it, it reinforces that anyone is capable!
It’s easy to feel discouraged when something is difficult, or to feel like you’re being held back by something. However, Taekwando is is a great confidence booster.
