When I met my husband, I thought he was Italian. I was quickly corrected by his immigrant parents: He is half Italian and half Sicilian.
“Isn’t Sicily in Italy” I asked?
“Yes it is, but it’s not the same.” I was quickly corrected and the learning began.
Sicily is Italy’s largest island. It has also been conquered many many times, hence Sicilians have a wrath of influence in their culture, language, food and appearance.
For those interested in the history, I suggest you read up on it, it is fascinating. Here’s a link.
This summer my father in law Joe Ferreri and his brother Sam who immigrated to Canada over 50 years ago visited their hometown, Santa Ninfa in Southern Sicily. It was the first time the brothers have visited their hometown together since they left.
If both of them were going for a visit, so were we!! I wanted my children to see and experience their Sicilian heritage. In total there were 22 of us Canadian Italians who made the trek.
As you can imagine the hospitality was off the charts. There are still many relatives in Santa Ninfa and they truly rolled out the red carpet for us. They made us feel so welcome and soooo full!!!
It really was a trip of a lifetime! Sicily is truly magical. It should be on everyone’s travel bucket list. The history is incredible, the landscape is stunning, and the food is out of this world. It’s like being placed into a romantic history novel.
Here’s the VLOG of our trip. If you have any questions about Sicily please let me know! I want the whole world to know how spectacular Sicily is!! It is a traveller’s paradise.
